Diary Of A Gringo

I created this blog to document my journey backpacking through South America and southern Africa during 2006-2007. I know, it's now been ages since my trip, but I still find myself coming back here every now and again to remind myself of people and places that I would otherwise have completely forgotten. I had a lot of fun producing this content, and even though you're coming across this blog years after the party's over, you may still find it a useful and interesting resource.

Maps

It´s just like Indiana Jones. Kind of.

I HAVE decided to draw a map to show where I´m at. I have included a South America map, and also a world map to get the 'Big Picture'. For extra detail, I have included a key to show different modes of transport, although I don´t know if I´ll be going on many boat trips, to be honest. Oh, and just to get some perspective, one tiny little orange line is a mammoth 20 hour bus journey.

The Highlights

The Lowlights

Shakira. THERE IS NO ESCAPE
Throwing up on boat whilst whale watching
Dodgy stomach throughout much of Bolivia and Peru
Listening to some backpackers talk ENDLESSLY about themselves and their travels
Near 40 degree heat in Cordoba, Argentina. My blood is too thick for such temperature
People begging and living on the streets. It's very sad and upsetting. Also, AIDS is pretty rubbish.
32-hour bus ride in Chile. Part of my life that I won't get back
Pollo con arroz (chicken and rice). I ate waaay too much of this in many parts of South America

26 hours to alcohol-related 'bug' in Bariloche, Argentina

My mp3 player (well, it's broken)
Literally, days of my life on planes and buses
My friend Beat to his Peruvian love strumpet Maribel
A copy of the newest Killers album (I think Beat has it)
My mind listening to Bolivian 'pop' music
